GROWING UP IN RANDOLPH, MA, Joe was an inaugural member of Massachusetts' first Junior Hockey League, with the Weymouth Conquistadors. Drafted at the age of 16 by the Sherbrook Castors, Joe became one of only a few US-born players to play Major Junior Hockey in Canada. He was a valuable contributor, playing in a Memorial Cup Championship and International World Junior Hockey Tournament.

As a player, Joe was recognized for his rugged play, yet he was beloved by teammates for his fierce loyalty and ability to protect and defend them. This reputation earned him a mid-season trade to Laval National, where he was called upon to protect future NHL Hall-of-Famer, Mike Bossy.

When Joe's professional hockey career concluded with the NHL Atlanta Flames, his passion for the game found a new home at Newburyport's Graf Rink where he coached with Triton Youth Hockey and played his last game with his cherished hockey pals. Known as “Coach" to many, including his daughters and grandchildren, Joe took pride in volunteering and 'giving back' to the game that gave him so much joy.

A great player, but a better man, Joe Carlevale will be forever remembered as a true ambassador of hockey.

Joe Carlevale, a dedicated spouse, father, grandfather, friend, ice hockey coach and long-time Ipswich resident, passed away on July 11th, 2017, at the age of 59, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. His passing left a void in many lives, including his family, friends and local hockey community. While devotion to family came first for Joe, it was the game of hockey that sparked his early identity and created a life-long passion to ‘give-back’ to the sport he loved.

To honor Joe, and continue to pay-it-forward, the Joseph F. Carlevale Jr. Memorial Ice Hockey Scholarship, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, was formed to provide financial assistance to deserving young athletes who wish to participate in youth ice hockey.  Funding for the hockey scholarship will be generated through events and private donations.  We appreciate your interest and financial support.
